2000 years of history
Bagni della Regina Giovanna
Sorrento has an ancient history, and the Bagni della Regina Giovanna are a clear example of it. Here you’ll find the remains of the Villa of Pollio Felice, a Roman residence built in the 1st century AD — the same period as ancient Pompeii. It was a time when the wealthiest families of the Empire chose the Sorrento coast as a holiday retreat, drawn by its mild climate and natural beauty. The villa, overlooking the sea, was designed to blend seamlessly with the landscape, with terraces, private spaces, and direct access to the water.
The name used today comes from a medieval legend linked to Queen Joanna II of Anjou (15th century), who is said to have bathed in this hidden lagoon.
Today, the archaeological site is free to visit, and so is access to the sea — a rare place where you can swim surrounded by ancient history and unspoiled nature.
